Jamie Austin Joins JHU As Program Coordinator for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Technologies Concentration
Jamie Austin is the new program coordinator for the new Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies concentration. She is based at the Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus.
Austin grew up in Ohio and attended the University of Notre Dame, where she majored in chemical engineering. She did graduate work in Tennessee, where she met a former Johns Hopkins University professor and worked in his lab. She later completed her master’s in Bioscience Regulatory Affairs from JHU. She then earned her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Michigan, where she did HIV research.
While working on her Ph.D., Austin taught regulatory affairs courses online for JHU’s Advanced Academic Programs; she also was the program coordinator for regulatory science.
After several years working in industry on virology, gene therapy and oncology drugs, she decided to return to JHU.
In her current role, Austin develops curriculum, advises students and teaches. Her courses include Biological Processes in Regulatory Affairs; Regenerative Medicine: Bench to Bedside; and Stem Cell Culture Laboratory Methods. The regenerative medicine course and the stem cell course are requirements for the new concentration in Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies, which is part of the Master of Science in Biotechnology.
The new Regenerative and Stem Cell Technologies concentration is designed for current or aspiring biotechnology professionals who want to acquire an in-depth understanding of stem cells, gene therapy, cell therapy, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Students pursuing the concentration must take 10 courses, including four specific to the concentration. Most courses can be completed online; the Stem Cell Culture Laboratory Methods class has an onsite component at the Montgomery County Campus.
