Barbara Crews, assistant executive director for community relations at the Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus, has been tapped to serve as chair of the board of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce.

Crews previously served the Chamber as a board member; vice chair for member recruitment and retention; and most recently as chair-elect. She has been involved with the Chamber since 2014.

"Ron Daniels, the president of Johns Hopkins, identified commitment to community as one of four priorities for all of Johns Hopkins," Crews said. "Being part of the Chamber is a way we support Montgomery County. Our involvement strengthens our relationships with Montgomery College, the Universities at Shady Grove and the local business community. That is important as we pursue the JHU mission of educating the next generation.”

The JHU Montgomery County Campus is a longtime member and corporate sponsor of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce and collaborates with the Chamber on several economic development, legislative, educational and other initiatives. JHU also sponsors the Chamber’s annual dinner and public safety awards breakfast. The campus has been the site of many chamber-related events, including networking activities for young professionals.

"It’s our civic duty to add our voice to the community conversation," Crews said.

In her role as chair of the Chamber’s board of directors, Crews will work to support the roughly 400 members, representing more than 31,000 employees. She will help businesses get the most out of their memberships, and will support the board and executive committee in their mission to "work with local city, county and state lawmakers to strengthen, enhance and protect businesses."

"Barbara has been a great asset to the Chamber," said Marilyn Balcombe, the Chamber’s president and chief executive. “She is actively engaged with the business community and has been a strong leader on our Board. We look forward to Barbara becoming the Chair of the Board at the Chamber.”

In addition to her work with the Chamber, Crews is an active member of the Quince Orchard High School PTSA and Booster Club. She also volunteers at Our Lady of the Visitation Parish. She is a graduate of the Leadership Montgomery Class of 2014.

Before joining Hopkins in 2008, Crews was the director of catering and special events for luxury hotel companies.

Crews will be inducted at the Chamber’s annual celebration and awards dinner on Dec. 7.
