Hopkins Staff Collects Bread to Donate to Interfaith Works
Johns Hopkins University Montgomery County Campus staff members collected hundreds of loaves of bread baked by elementary school students, and donated the loaves to Interfaith Works.
It was part of a collaboration between Hopkins, King Arthur Flour and the City of Gaithersburg to raise awareness of issues involving food insecurity in our community. The project is called Bake for Good Gaithersburg.
Throughout the month of March, instructors from King Arthur Flour visited 10 elementary and middle schools within the city and taught students the science behind bread baking. The Vermont-based flour company provided enough materials for students to bake two loaves of bread at home. Students were to enjoy one loaf with their families and return the second loaf to school for donation.
Many of the loaves went to Interfaith Works, a nonprofit organization that helps hundreds of people every day. JHU staff brought the bread to the organization’s Women’s Center.
“Every day, I see hundreds of families come to the Interfaith Works Clothing Center to receive free clothing and household goods,” said Monica Barbaris-Young, director of family services. “I can see they are struggling and need so much more than what we are able to normally provide. It is truly wonderful to be able to give them something extra, such as bread. We so appreciate the effort of the students, Johns Hopkins University and King Arthur Flour for making this possible.”
Some schools donated the bread to other local shelters and food pantries; some schools donated the bread to their own students in need.
At Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, fifth-grade teacher Katie Zitrick said her students appreciated the math, science and community giving lessons of the program.
“The assembly provided my students with an understanding of how fractions are part of our real world,” Zitrick said. “Understanding the science behind baking and fractions will help students understand how what we learn in the classroom can be applied to our everyday lives. This program will also help our students understand the importance of community and helping others. Having students bring in baked bread for others stresses how we all can impact the community and benefit others.”
